"For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
Part of God’s great design to this earth is seasons. We experience winter, spring, summer, and fall, and there are seasons of planting and harvesting. (ummmm….hello spring? We see you hiding around the corner…time to come out now!). There are times of joy, newness, and growth or even sadness and loss.
All of these life seasons are intentional and change is part of God's plan. We can sense that God is up to something new.
And this season, God is blessing Northgate with a couple of exciting changes on our Board of Directors that we're celebrating!
First, a big round of applause for Diane Peterson, who, after almost 12 years of service on our board, will be opening her seat to pursue more time with her husband, Scott, in their part-time Arizona home, see their grandchildren, and open up to other ministry passions.
We did a quick Q & A with her this week and here’s some of what she had to say about her time on the board:
Q. What has been your favorite aspect of serving on Northgate's Board of Directors?
A. The vision and the relationships. It has been a huge privilege for the last 11 1/2 years to hear Pastor Steve and our leadership team share their hearts and vision for this church and watch God move to change individuals, families, and our community through this ministry. As much as I dislike meetings in general, I love the time I've spent in Northgate Board meetings as these have been times of sharing vision, serving the church, building friendships, giving and receiving encouragement, stretching ourselves in faith, and lifting the church and each other up in prayer. I will miss that!
Q. How have you seen the ministry grow and mature over the years? What are you most proud of?
A. Wow. I feel like we've all grown up together in so many ways. I remember 12 of us meeting in Pastor Steve's living room almost 12 years ago. We officially launched Northgate with a picnic in Central Park in August of that year, with no idea of how many people would show up. If I remember right, almost 500 people came out; it totally blew us away.
People gave generous gifts to get the church budget off the ground. We rented space at PACT school, where we moved everything in and out every week to hold the services in the gym. We set up risers for a platform, and had a tiny projector on a table in an aisle to project song lyrics onto a screen up front. Scott and I had some big thermal beverage dispensers, so we were in charge of bringing those and making/serving the lemonade every week. We met so many new people and made so many friends as everyone went through the line for lemonade, donuts, and coffee.
I met precious saints (and church founders) like Harlan Menk as he swept the floors, and Dick and Judy Eliason, as we set up or took down chairs. I cherish the friendships with these and so many other wonderful, inspirational servants.
The preaching, worship, and team-based leadership has grown exponentially. I've watched new or young Christians turn into great servant-leaders and kids from Kidnection grow up into faith-filled young men and women of God.
Through it all, God provided. As Pastor Wayne always said, "Not too much, not too little. Just enough."
Q. Any silly stories from working on the board?
A. As I mentioned above, Scott and I made and served the lemonade for the first year or so of Northgate services, while we met at PACT. Scott was also involved in the church steering committee at the time. At one point during those days, he was trying out a new voice-to-text software. In typical Scott-joking-around fashion, he spoke a voice-to-text email to the steering committee and added "Who made the lemonade? It's delicious." The software translated it to, "Who made the lemonade? It still itches."
Q. What words of encouragement would you offer to our congregation?
A. I can't say it better than Philippians 1:3-6: "I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Diane and Scott have their fingerprints all over Northgate’s ministry and their leadership has impacted us in more ways than we can say. If you see Diane, thank her for many years of service on the board and bless their family as they continue to share the love Jesus in their other ministry efforts, like iiFilms --did we mention these guys make legit movies?
But Diane’s departure isn’t the only shift on our board—we also welcome Brian Olson as he joins this group of dedicated leaders.
To give you a brief introduction, we asked him a few questions as well. Here’s what he shared:
Q. Tell us a little bit about your family…
A. My wife, Maggie and I have been married for 17 years. We have six kids: Abe 15, Everett 13, Sylvia 12, Elijah 10, Teddy 5, Amery 2. We have lived in Ramsey for eight years and have been attending Northgate for seven of those years, but lived in England for two of them.
Q. How did you find Northgate and what do you love about this community?
A. We found Northgate by watching the messages online to start, but we were hooked after our first in-person visit. What kept us in the lobby that day was good coffee and donuts, but it was the people that really drew us in, and they continue to do so. Our first Sunday at Northgate we were welcomed by tons of people and met almost all the pastors...on our FIRST DAY! We felt welcomed and very impressed. Northgate now just feels like one big extended family which is really how it should be.
Q. How have you been serving at church all these years?
A. I have been serving for a number of years in the choir as well as the 4-7 yr old Kidnection class. This winter Maggie and I led a small group and an Alpha group for the first time, which was an amazing experience and I can't wait to do it again. My latest adventure will be leading the mountain biking affinity group which is going to be awesome!
Q. What excites you most about serving on the Board of Directors?
A. To be honest, the emotion that comes when I think about being on the board is honor - I feel an amazing amount of honor to be able to serve such a great organization in this capacity. That said, I am also excited to be part of the future journey that Northgate is on and to be able to help shape and guide how we become a leader in the Ramsey area, reaching as many people as we can to help them be who God purposed them to be! I know that great things are soon to come and can't wait to see them happen.
Q. Any message you’d like to share with our church community as you start this new chapter?
A. I have been so inspired all these years, watching Northgate leadership teach and grow with the goal of 100% alignment with Jesus. We are truly blessed with a team of people that are completely committed to Jesus and His teachings as the backstop for everything they do--and they hold each other collectively accountable to stay the course. They’ve created a culture here where anyone can come to be encouraged and transformed into who God purposed them to be. I’m so glad I can contribute to that mission as I continue serve alongside you in this new role. Thank you for the opportunity, Northgate!
We’re overwhelmed by the amazing leaders that keep emerging in our midst, and all for His glory. As Brian said, great things are coming—of that we can be sure.
